The project formed by Shye Ben Tzur, Jonny Greenwood and The Rajasthan Express has announced the release of his new album, “Ranjha”scheduled for May 8, 2026.
As a preview, the group has shared the single “Shemesh”, accompanied by a video clip directed by Ian Patrick.
The album arrives more than a decade after “Junun” (2015), the acclaimed ensemble debut that Paul Thomas Anderson documented in an eponymous film. That work was recorded in the Mehrangarh fort, in India, this time the band has opted for a different environment: the Greenwood studio in Oxford.
Produced by Sam Petts-Davies, “Ranjha” maintains the collaborative spirit of the project, combining influences from Sufi music, Rajasthani folk and contemporary arrangements. In total, the album features the participation of more than twenty musicians and vocalists.
The history of the project dates back to Ben Tzur’s discovery of Indian music, which led him to move to Rajasthan, learn the language and found The Rajasthan Express. For his part, Greenwood, known for his work in Radiohead, brings his experience as a composer and explorer of new sounds.
Although the new album has been in the making for years, its development was interrupted by the pandemic. Finally, the result promises an evolution with respect to “Junun”with a more defined sound and a more detailed production without losing the spontaneity of the creative process.
With “Shemesh”, the project once again demonstrates its ability to fuse diverse musical traditions into a contemporary and emotional proposal.
