Shawn Mendes has spoken out about his sexuality during a concert held on Monday night in Denver, Colorado. Spoiler: it has been very ambiguous. But, at least, he has indirectly responded to all those fans who have been harassing him online for years to come out of the closet, despite the fact that he has only publicly dated women – and even if he had not done so – and as if sexuality were not a personal and intimate journey that belongs to each one.
The systematic harassment that Shawn Mendes has suffered – for years, since the beginning of his career – for his sexuality has potentially negatively affected his mental health and is a symptom of the toxic relationship between fans and celebrities. Known is the case of actor Kit Connor, who publicly declared himself bisexual in 2023 after harassment from his followers.
Some fans have continued to assign Mendes an imagined homosexuality and bisexuality, and Mendes has taken advantage of his time in Denver to speak publicly about the subject for the first time. “The truth about my life and my sexuality is that I am still discovering them, like everyone else,” he declared. «Sometimes I have no idea, and other times I do. It’s a little scary because we live in a society that has a lot to say about this topic. I’m trying to be brave and allow myself to be human and feel things. And this is all I’m going to say.
Mendes’ words sound sincere enough for the singer to feel free to explore his sexuality without pressure. However, that freedom does not have to be “earned,” since it belongs to you, even if some try to take it away from you.
On the other hand, the fact that Mendes is about to release an album may have something to do with the Canadian having decided to speak just now. After all, he has also profited from his romantic relationships, especially the one he had with Camila Cabello. And, in any case, Mendes could not have been more ambiguous and his words are not going to stop the speculation, quite the opposite. ‘Shawn’, his new album, comes out on November 15.
