Saxophonist and composer David Sanborn dies

The saxophonist David Sanborn He has died at the age of seventy-eight. A message posted on her social media announced the news, stating that it was due to “a long battle against prostate cancer with complications.”

David Sanborn He was born in 1945 in Tampa (Florida), although he grew up in Missouri, on the outskirts of St. Louis. He started playing the saxophone after his doctor thought it could help him strengthen his chest muscles after contracting polio at a young age. At fourteen years old he was already playing with blues legends.

After studying music at Northwestern University and the University of Iowa, he moved to California and joined the Butterfield Blues Band, with whom he performed at Woodstock. Sanborn was a prolific session musician before (and after) releasing his first solo album, “Taking Off”in 1975.

Over the years, he worked with Stevie wonder, David Bowie, James Taylor, James Brown, Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, Eric Clapton, Steely Dan, Billy Joel, Roger Waters and many, many more.

In the 80s, he was a member of the band Saturday night Live and appeared regularly with Paul Shaffer's band on Late Night With David Letterman. He was co-host of the show Night Music from 1988 to 1989 with Jools Holland. Sanborn also composed the soundtracks for several films, including “Psycho III” and the film series “lethal weapon”.

Sanborn He won six Grammys throughout his career, including for his albums “Voyeur” (81), “Double Vision” (86) and “Close Up” (88). “David Sanborn was a fundamental figure in contemporary pop and jazz music,” was announced in the statement announcing his death. “It has been said that he brought the saxophone back to Rock'n Roll.”
