With ‘Espresso’ and ‘Please Please Please’ both at the top of the global charts, Sabrina Carpenter clearly has one of the most eagerly awaited albums of the summer and of the year on her hands. ‘Short n’ Sweet’ is out August 23.
In promotion of ‘Short n’ Sweet’, Carpenter has just given a talk at the Clive Davis Theatre at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles, in which the album’s producer, Jack Antonoff, also participated. Together, they sang ‘Espresso’, ‘Please Please Please’ and a new song in acoustic format.
Carpenter has decided to debut “Slim Pickins,” track 9 from “Short n’ Sweet,” live. The title alludes to Carpenter having “few options” left for boyfriends because, as she sings in the lyrics, she only dates “assholes” and the good guys “are either taken or dead.” “A good guy, breathing,” Carpenter sings, “I haven’t seen him in a while.”
‘Slim Pickins’ joins the long tradition of comedic country songs that has given us classics like Loretta Lynn’s ‘You’re the Reason Our Kids Are Ugly’ and Deana Carter’s ‘Did I Shave My Legs for This?’. In ‘Slim Pickins’ Carpenter describes a boy who can’t master grammar (“This boy doesn’t even know the difference between ‘their,’ ‘there’ and ‘they are'”) and blames God for not making her a lesbian: “And since the Lord forgot about my gay awakening,” Carpenter sings, “I’m just gonna keep on bitching here in the kitchen.”
While ‘Slim Pickins’ doesn’t go as far into its comedic component as the aforementioned country classics, it does bring back that humorous side that Sabrina has exhibited on her previous two singles. The bigger question is how ‘Espresso’ will fit into all of this.
