Real Estate have announced a new album. ‘Daniel’ goes on sale on February 23, via Domino, containing 11 cuts. The ‘Daniel’ in the title may be a reference to the album’s producer, Daniel Tashian, with whom the members of Real Estate recorded the album “during a nine-day bender at Nashville’s RCA Studio A.” Tashian is the winner of several Grammys for his work in the historic ‘Golden Hour’ (2018) by Kacey Musgraves.
The press release explains that “the songs on ‘Daniel’ are simple but inventive, shining and radiating without hesitation or doubt, and connecting the uninhibited wonder of Real Estate’s early work with the gained perspective of adulthood.”
The first preview, ‘Water Underground’, is another piece of friendly indie-pop from the New Jersey crowd. “This song is about writing songs,” said Martin Courtney. «I think ‘Water Underground’ is like the unconscious, the mysterious part of your brain where creativity comes from. The constant flow of music in the back of your head. You get an idea while you’re driving or walking the dog or something and you want to stick with it.”
The video for ‘Water Underground’ is inspired by the 1990s Nickelodeon series ‘The Adventures of Pete & Pete’. Directed by Edmond Hawkins, it stars “Pete & Pete” star Danny Tamberelli, who, like the cast of Real Estate, is a New Jersey native. In the clip, Tamberelli appears alongside his co-star Michael C. Maronna. The video was filmed in the suburbs of New Jersey.
“Julian, Alex and Martin all grew up a town away from me and were actually friends with my friends’ little brothers from Ridgewood,” Tamberelli revealed. «They told me that they even saw me perform at the local bandstand with some of those older brothers when I was in high school. “The video comes full circle and adding my old and dear friends from the show brings it all together.”
