EZEZEZ, the guitar band from Bilbao that, in recent years, has set the stages of Spanish festivals such as Bilbao BBK Live or Monkey Week on fire with its furious mix of punk, funk and garage distortion, captured in shots like the eponymous ‘Ezezez ‘ or ‘Mutiko II’, releases a new album in 2025, the third of his career. The first preview can be heard for the first time today on JENESAISPOP.
Not many months ago, EZEZEZ delved into his love of 70s funk in an interview with this same medium, in which he cited people like James Brown among his influences. It’s no surprise that the mix of punk and funk on ‘PUNTOFINAL’ is once again flammable, and also very fun.
Written “almost by accident”, based on an addictive bass line that channeled the composition very quickly, ‘PUNTOFINAL’ uses a furious energy to explore the theme of identity and acceptance, both one’s own and that of another. In contrast to its instrumentation, the lyrics of ‘PUNTOFINAL’ come loaded with tenderness and humor in phrases recited in Basque that appeal to the Basque phenotype (“my nose is very Basque and I have fallen in love with you”) or romantic auteur cinema (“ I am Nino, your Amélie / we will put an end to our loneliness. In the year of ‘Joker’ there is also something of “Folie à deux” in passages like “With this dyslexia I can’t move forward / I’m crazy, but I know you are too.”
The press release explains that ‘PUNTOFINAL’ “was born in the studio in an improvised and spontaneous way.” The song is written “from the perspective of those who find their place in the world through the love of another person”, and explores themes such as “belonging and the feeling of identity” without losing the irony that characterizes the band composed of singer and lyricist Unai Madariaga, guitarist and producer Eneko Ajangiz, drummer Álvaro Olaetxea and bassist Mikel Irigoyen.
The music video for ‘PUNTOFINAL’ is country-style and stars EZEZEZ and dantzari Jakes De Irala. Directed by Iyán Altube, a regular collaborator of the band.
EZEZEZ has been on tour since the beginning of 2025: on January 10 he plays at the Sanagustin Kulturgunea in Azpeitia with Tatxers, on January 17 at the EUROSONIC festival in Groningen, Netherlands; on January 25 at the Dabadaba in San Sebastián together with Parquesvr and on June 20 at the Azkena Rock Festival in Vitoria.
