Patti Smith excites covering Lana Del Rey

Patti Smith will perform for free in Gijón on October 20

Patti Smith will offer a free concert in Gijón on October 20, just 50 years after her first performance in Spain. The event will take place at the Jovellanos Theater and will be organized by the Princess of Asturias Foundation, on the occasion of the 2026 Princess of Asturias Award for the Arts that the artist will collect three days later in Oviedo.

Coincidentally, on October 20, 1976, Patti Smith performed before about 5,000 people at the Badalona Youth Club Pavilion. He then presented his second album, ‘Radio Ethiopia’, and songs from his legendary ‘Horses’ were also played, as well as versions of The Velvet Underground and the Rolling Stones.

The Badalona performance was received by the press of the time as “the first rock’n’roll concert that has been seen and heard in this country”, as 20 Minutos recalls. Now Smith will return to Spain to receive the Princess of Asturias and, incidentally, repeat the date half a century later.
