Pale Complexion, between The Good Life and shoegaze

Pálida Tez are a young group from Albacete formed by María Virosta (voice and guitar), Samuel Cuevas (guitar and voice), Manuel Castaño (drums) and Elena Perales (bass). They are fascinated by the sounds of alternative pop of the 90s. Their first EP, ‘Journey to the Back Room of the House’, came out in 2023.

They have recently released an album with El Genio Equivocado, ‘A strange state of mind’, produced by Carlos Hernández Nombela. But first they previewed the album with ‘Último match’, our Song of the Day today.

Now that it finally seems that the cold has arrived, it is a good time to recover a song that is pure nostalgia. An initial guitar à la Nick Drake gives way to María’s voice, which is reminiscent of that of Irantzu Valencia, combined with that of Samuel. What may seem like a bit arty lyrics at first immediately refers to customs: “let’s go drink in the neighborhood square.” A nostalgic song to lost pre-adolescence, to wasting time on the street with friends.

‘Last Match’ refers to the melancholy of post-Family groups like Dar Ful Ful, but also to shoegaze. Towards the middle the song perks up, shaking off the languor, not the longing, until reaching the final coda, in which the lo-fi synthesizer solo reaches an atmosphere that is as special as it is exciting.
