The “national priority” proposal, included in the PP and VOX agreements in Extremadura and Aragón, has ignited the political debate in recent days due to its defense of a supposed “Spanishness” based on the origin of the father and mother, as well as its restrictive nature towards people residing in Spain in an irregular situation. PSOE MEP López Aguilar has announced that he will transfer the matter to the European Commission, where he has warned of its possible incompatibility with European values and even with the Constitution itself.
The topic came up during an interview with Pablo Alborán on Henar Álvarez’s program, Al cielo con ella, where the singer indirectly alluded to the political idea of VOX and its concept of a supposed authentic Spanishness.
When talking about the difference between the Spanish and Latin American audiences, Alborán explains his feeling of roots as a Spaniard for having been born in the country. However, he adds a reflection related to current events: “Spain, obviously, is my country, I was born here. Although, as my mother is French, born in Morocco, some say that I am not Spanish, because I am not born to a Spanish father and mother… Maybe I am no longer Spanish, depending on who.”
That “who” to whom Alborán indirectly refers is the spokesperson for VOX in Catalonia, Joan Garriga, who has defended in the framework of the debate on “national priority” that a Spaniard would be someone who “was born of a Spanish father and mother”, a statement contrary to Spanish legal reality, which contemplates various ways to acquire nationality beyond family origin.
Álvarez, who catches the reference to the flight, responds “You would not be a national priority”, in clear allusion to the political precept that VOX intends to implement throughout Spain. Alborán agrees and adds that precisely his condition as a Spaniard and the development of his career in Spain have allowed him to project himself internationally: “Spain is what has allowed me to go to Latin America or Europe.”
