Overmono experiment with new textures in ‘Pure Devotion’

Overmono have announced the arrival of their second album, titled ‘Pure Devotion’, which will be on sale next Friday, August 7. The Russell brothers say that the follow-up to ‘Good Lies’ will be their “most ambitious project” yet and that it represents the sound of “beautiful imperfections” and “machine failures.”

The lead single from the album, ‘Lockup’, is a very powerful festival of textures that would have emerged inspired by the breaking of the rules of the post-punk era. Thus, the Welsh duo extensively samples the song ‘What A Waste’ by Birmingham Fast Relief in a song full of multiple different textures.

The duo says that with ‘Pure Devotion’ they wanted to “do something that captured the physical space of our studios.” To do this, they have experimented with new forms of recording, such as passing a voice “through an old speaker in the basement”, playing a synthesizer “with an old train station announcement speaker from the 1930s” or even baking “a saucer covered in coffee grounds, chips and vinegar.”
