We’re pretty used to it these days when someone in the audience throws something onto the stage and ends up hitting an artist. The cell phone that hit Bebe Rexha in the face is probably the most famous example, but there have been bottles, bracelets and all kinds of objects flying onto the stages. What is not so common is that it happens exactly the other way around.
That’s what happened during an Otoboke Beaver concert at Osaka’s Umeda Club Quattro last April. Yoyoyoshie, guitarist of the chaotic Japanese punk band, threw his guitar towards the audience, an action he had apparently done before without anyone being hurt. This time, however, the instrument hit a spectator.
The person had to be immediately taken to the hospital and suffered several injuries, including a laceration and a sprain. The wound on the front of his forehead required seven stitches. We are not very aware of how much it must hurt to have a guitar smashed into your head, but just thinking about it already hurts.
Otoboke Beaver has now publicly apologized for what happened, several months after the concert. The band acknowledges that it and the event team did not act quickly enough after the accident and that the response and direct apology was delayed.
In its statement, the group assures that it takes the incident “very seriously” and assumes responsibility for both the accident and the subsequent management. He also promises to take extreme precautions so that something like this does not happen again at his next concerts.
