‘Origami’ is Kesha’s new electropop delirium

Kesha is still immersed in her independent stage, a phase that a couple of years ago gave her a viral minihit on social media, the literally incredible ‘Joyride’, and which she consolidated with the release of a more than correct album, titled simply with a period. An idea that the Italian MYSS KETA had already explored years ago, but that Kesha, thanks to greater visibility and the interesting artistic direction of the project, was able to make her own.

Kesha’s career now continues with the release of a single with an equally disruptive aesthetic, although perhaps not as surprising as ‘Joyride’. ‘Origami’ does take Kesha’s sound to a less common terrain, close to synthpunk and 2000s electroclash, although her past as a mainstream electropop diva still appears in a chorusable chorus, clearly designed for collective singing.

For the rest, perhaps if ‘Joyride’ had not existed, ‘Origami’ would feel more like a shock than a simple extension of Kesha’s most absurd and uninhibited side. The song, loaded with distorted production details, and, above all, a lot of attitude on the part of the singer, is complemented by completely delirious lyrics inspired by Japanese culture, but also by other references that appear suddenly and just because, as demonstrated by that rhyme: “I’m serving supersexual, flexible intellectual / Meet me down in Shibuya, practice that kama-sutra.”

Although absurd, the striking video clip: a kind of simulated orgy that uses choreography full of sexual poses and, of course, the shape of that origami itself converted into an infallible double-meaning pop metaphor.

In addition, Kesha has explained that she has not danced so prominently in a video clip since ‘Die Young’, an experience that, according to her, was not positive. That’s why, with ‘Origami’, she aims to reappropriate that feeling: «The last time I danced in a video was for ‘Die Young’… and let’s say it wasn’t exactly an empowering experience for me. So this video not only feels like a recovery from that moment, but also like an opportunity to dance and have fun. And being in my body… because it is MINE, and that is what freedom means to me.
