Spotify reports that ‘Blinding Lights’ by The Weeknd is the first song in history to exceed 5,000 million streams on the platform. We already knew that it was the most reproduced theme on the Swedish platform, which a few years ago began to leave the YouTube figures far behind. The ‘Despacito’ video approaches 9,000 million streams on YouTube after 9 years, but that figure is already unimaginable for a current video.
A look at the most reproduced songs in the history of Spotify, that is, what songs are a threat to The Weeknd reign, it makes it clear that its main competitor is far away. ‘Shape of You’ by Ed Sheeran is at 4.5 billion streams but both this song and The Weeknd continue to add 1.5 million daily streams without a clear advantage of any. They are tied in popularity right now, then the leadership of The Weeknd’s hit goes for long.
On the other hand, an analysis of the Top 10 leaves a bitter taste in a summer already very bitter for Spotify, while no female artist, not one, appears in it. The only thing we could accept as female collaboration is the sample of an ancient Kyla theme that got into Dance ‘One Dance’. But the original theme was ‘do you mind’ of 2008 and it is not the one that appears here, obviously.
The first woman we really found in the list of more reproduced themes in Spotify’s history does so at number 13. It is Billie Eilish, only accompanied by Khalid in ‘Lovely’. Then, Halsey is Top 14 with ‘Closer’, a collaboration in which The Chainsmokers are the main artist.
If we stick to female artists absolutely alone, the Australian Tones and I appears in number 16 with ‘Dance Monkey’ (it was Top 3 on this list a few years ago, but has visibly worsened its position); Taylor Swift in 29th place with ‘Cruel Summer’ and Dua Lipa in 30th position with ‘Don’t Start Now’. The rest is a field of turnips, and it is partly because its algorithm does not primarily prevail.
This list contrasts slightly with the recent of the most reproduced themes in the history of Apple Music, where we found ‘Bad Guy’ by Billie Eilish in the Top 10 and ‘7 rings’ by Ariana Grande in number 19. We leave you with the top 10 historical of Spotify:
