The stagnation of the urban genre in Spain is increasingly clear. Rarely does something emerge on the scene that provokes a surprising reaction, with most artists involved in the routine of releasing the same song as the neighbor over and over again. This could be enough for an entire article. Nico is a pleasant surprise, standing out among a sea of copies with a simple guitar stroke.
The young Murcian artist burst onto the scene this year with a collaborative EP with Cutemobb, the Barcelona art collective led by LEÏTI. ‘NUEVO’ presented a sound, well, very much in line with the trap of the Catalan group. A few months later, NICO defined his artistic identity with a complete turn, changing the beats for a melancholic guitar, but maintaining the same flow, on the EP ‘Píldora’.
It is in ‘EL ADIVINO’, the Song of the Day, where Nico shows that he knows very well how to put his talents at the service of pop. The Murcian artist does not sacrifice anything that he has already shown in his previous releases, maintaining the cadence and rhymes of trap, as well as the catchy melodies of his “acoustic” EP. However, it wins because of how organic the instrumentation feels. In short, it feels fresh, despite not having invented anything.
As for the lyrics, it revolves around the fortune teller syndrome, known in psychology as the anticipation of a negative outcome by the patient in any situation, despite having no evidence or indications of any kind.
For most of the song this applies to a love story. The plot twist is the traffic accident that surely no one saw coming: “The bus was going to explode / I looked at you in the reflection of the glass, embarrassed,” he sings in the chorus.
