Gillian Gilbert, New Order’s legendary keyboardist since their formation in 1980, has announced that she has cancer. The statement comes after a misunderstanding in which it was understood that it was her husband, Stephen Morris, drummer of the group and formerly of Joy Division, who was dealing with a serious illness. Both also shared the duo The Other Two during the 90s, and have remained active occasionally since then.
In June, New Order had reported that neither Stephen nor Gillian would be going on tour for “serious health reasons.” During an interview with Rolling Stone upon being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Stephen Morris said that due to serious illness he would not be able to tour. People assumed it was him, but in reality it was his wife, as has now been clarified.
Gillian’s statement says: “I would like to clarify a misunderstanding arising from an interview, in which it has been interpreted that Stephen is seriously ill. Luckily, he’s fine. In fact, I am the one who, like many other people, lives with cancer. “We completely understand how the misunderstanding has been created and we simply wanted to share the correct information.” Finally, Gillian is grateful for the solidarity they have received as a couple, and they ask for privacy “to continue with the treatment.”
