New album by The XX or new album by Oliver Sim?

Oliver Sim, a member of The XX trio, publishes this week his new single, the first unpublished theme since he has offered his debut ‘Hideous Bastard’ in 2022. The song, which is titled ‘Obsession’, has the peculiarity of not being produced by its colleague Jamie XX, but by Bullion and Taylor Skye, having been recorded between London and Los Angeles.

His stamp that this theme “marks the beginning of a new era of experimentation, collaboration and invention for the London musician.” Of course, the word “album” is not mentioned. In addition, the same press release indicates that The XX are “currently working on their highly anticipated fourth album after having met on the stage of the Jamie Lido Festival in London.” Now there is only doubt what will end or what we will hear first: if The XX album or more clues of “this new era” solo of Oliver Sim.

‘Obsession’, which officially speaks of falling in love and lust, is presented with a video directed by Sharna Osborne with the collaboration of Erin O’Connor in the cast. In truth, ‘Obsession’ is a duo collaboration with Katie O’Neill, which together with the type of synthesizers places the song in the vicinity of Human League or his revivalist Juan McLean.

In the letter, Oliver expresses her confusion, and she is the one who comes to explain that the lust is sometimes confused with the obsession. “It’s not love,” he says in a moment. “I swear it is obsession,” he says in another, as the classic written by Romeo Santos for adventure. Far from The XX sound – for all, in this case – and with so clear ideas about the concept of the subject, only a verse that really “obsess” has lacked him. Do those icy “do-do-dos” make up the chorus of the song or did it hope to be the outro that is repeated at the end?

Finally, Oliver Sim has also been news for having appeared in Lookbook ‘Resort’ by Jw Anderson, along with the actress of ‘Saltburn’ Alison Oliver, director Luca Guadagnino, actors Joe Alwyn and Ben Whishaw, stylist Danielle Goldberg, fashion designer Bella Freud and photographer Gray Sorrenti.
