Mykki Blanco, known for erasing the boundaries between hip-hop, punk and electronica, presents ‘NYC Dogs’, the third preview of ‘CAFE PARADISO’, the album she will release in September.
After the dance-punk of ‘Butt Sex’ and the alternative R&B of ‘Little Feet’, ‘NYC Dogs’ is an electro-punk production that, between jangle plucks, rugged synths and insistent drums, evokes the revelries of the New York underground of times gone by.
The repetitive chorus, “It was a dog in New York City,” functions as a mantra that celebrates a nocturnal, queer and decadent New York, in line with the glam and post-punk aesthetic that inspires the production.
The song, as if possessed by the spirit of Iggy Pop, includes several memorable hooks, such as the elongated “hi-ayyyyyy” of the chorus, and a smoky saxophone arrangement that enriches the production and, at the same time, contrasts with its punk sound.
‘CAFE PARADISO’ will be Mykki Blanco’s first album since ‘Stay Close to Music’ (2022). After that release and the EP ‘Postcards from Italia’ (2023), Blanco temporarily stepped away from music to pursue a master’s degree in Fine Arts in Switzerland. The new album, produced with Drew “FaltyDL” Lustman, promises to explore different styles, from art pop to club music, in a work conceived as a “festival album.”
