‘My 45’ is the great and renewed return of Cuco

Cuco is at its best. Sober, inspired and prepared to deliver ‘Ridin’, his new album, on May 9, the 26 -year -old artist (yes, he is still that young) moves away from the narcotic pop Bedroom that has always characterized him to travel more organic paths. ‘My 45’ is one of the best singles of his career and today’s song.

Omar Banos released his first album with 18 years and has not really gone through great artistic changes during his career. In part, because the formula of songs like ‘What I feel’ or ‘do Better’ is super effective. In ‘Fantasy Getaway’ (2022), his compositions charged more complexity, but he was still strongly tied to his psychedelic style.

Everything changes with the arrival of ‘Icnby’, ‘My 45’ and ‘Phases’, the great advances of the fifth and next Cuco album. This maintains its taste for the melodies of the Doo Wop and Soul school, while replacing all kinds of sequences or digital sounds by real instruments, almost in an orchestral way, to sound cooler than ever.

With the great trumpets that adorn the three themes, it is impossible not to think of the Mexican musical inheritance of the young artist. It is precisely these who welcome the listener in ‘My 45’, the most immediate of the singles. Cuco dedicates the song to his partner, whom he identifies as a gun: “You know it is fighting / for me I would kill someone,” he sings in the first verse.

This theme also marks the return of Jean Carter, which gives this time a playful verse. This appeared in ‘Bossa I don’t know’, one of the most celebrated songs in the Cuco Universe. In fact, it became one of C. Tangana’s influences to create the fusion sound of ‘El Madrid’. He included it in the Playlist that accompanied the exit of the album at the time.
