MUNA become obsessive and eighties after 4 years

MUNA has kept its fans clamoring with the follow-up to its self-titled third album, released in 2022 via Saddest Factory, Phoebe Bridgers’ label. Four years have passed since that time, but the American trio formed by Katie Gavin, Josette Maskin and Naomi McPherson, who have meant so much to queer youth over the last decade, finally have a new album on their hands.

‘Dancing on the Wall’ will be released on May 8 and is presented as an album that is both “intimate and spectacular”, which proposes a “pop universe constructed with ingenuity” and works as a “soundtrack for hearts that burn while observing the chaos around them.”

The album, the official press release continues, “channels the anxiety of living in a Los Angeles marked by political tension, environmental deterioration and the silent pressures of millennial precariousness,” and musically it will combine “euphoric soundscapes with a close and sharp narrative.”

The sound of the first preview of ‘Dancing on the Wall’, the title track, meets that description, which shines by recreating the aesthetics of the eighties synth-pop radio formula. Exuding melody and synthetic elegance, the song invites you to dance while describing the attachment to an emotionally inaccessible person whom MUNA cannot give up. “I know how to hurt myself with you,” Gavin sings in the lyrics, trapped in an emotional loop that is as damaging as it is addictive.
