MIA has attacked Rosalía for “imitating the Christian lifestyle” in its current stage, following Vila Tobella’s appearance in Vogue’s spring editorial. Rosalía is on the cover of the magazine and appears in the interior photographs posing in a transparent tunic, although Arulpragasam must also be referring to the entire aesthetic of ‘Lux’ without mentioning it directly.
Maya has uploaded two images of her wearing a tunic similar to Rosalía’s and has criticized that Vogue contributes to building “false prophets to obtain benefits”, while the rapper would have been “cancelled” after her conversion to Catholicism. “Some of us live this life,” the British rapper has written. “I’m not saying that she is stealing from God, but I am being canceled for being a Christian, while she imitates my life and benefits within the industry and the Catholic Church, so she has the entire system helping her steal my work.”
MIA has added her message by crying: «I RAISE MY VOICE AGAINST SATAN AND HIS TEAM OF IMITATORS. In the name of Jesus.”
Mathangi, who grew up Hindu, converted to Christianity in 2017 after experiencing a “life-changing vision of Jesus Christ.”
This is not the first time that MIA denounces an alleged erasure of her influence in popular culture: in 2024, the author of ‘Paper Planes’ pointed out Adele for not having recognized an alleged debt towards her, while she was full of praise for Beyoncé. MIA maintained that Adele signed to XL Recordings because MIA introduced her to her manager.
Rosalía and MIA met on stage at the Motomami Tour in 2022, during their time in Los Angeles, where they both melted into a warm hug. Rosalía has always recognized the influence of MIA and mentions the name of the British rapper in her song ‘Bulerías’.
@voguemagazine setting up false prophet’s for profits. Listen to some of us live this life. And I’m not saying she is stealing God from me but I’m canceled for being Christian yet she mimics my life and is profiting the industry and the Catholic church so she has the entire system… pic.twitter.com/CUjRGMWQe4
