Massive Attack have released a statement in which they recount how, after removing the Palestinian flag at a concert in Singapore, they were detained by the police. Some of its members even underwent hotel room inspections and temporary confiscation of their passports.
“Following our performance at the Star Theater in Singapore on July 29, we were surprised and disappointed that our entire band was detained by the police, isolated and questioned separately,” the statement begins. The band explains that it all started when the audience spontaneously began chanting “Free Palestine.”
They claim that they were not aware that “this expression alone could violate the censorship laws of their government”: “For our part, we did not imagine that raising a flag of a sovereign country recognized by another 157 countries would violate any law,” they swear in the statement.
Singapore prohibits the public display of foreign national emblems of any kind. In the statement, the British group also says it is proud of its followers for “showing solidarity with the Palestinian people in their continuing reality of illegal occupation, apartheid and genocide.”
