The summer in which the ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’ singer left us, a total eclipse occurs today, which in Spain can be seen around 8:30 p.m., in whole or in part depending on your location. The coincidence is too perfect not to take advantage of, and Martin Urrutia does so with ‘When the sun kisses the moon’, a song that uses the phenomenon to imagine a story of love and desire as intense as it is fleeting.
Written by Martin himself along with Adrià Arbona (Papa Topo) and Marco Frías (El Buen Hijo), the song begins with acoustic guitar and a warm vocal performance that becomes especially heartfelt in the chorus. “Little white sand, the manta rays will cry,” he sings before the synths and verses appear such as “your gaze will burn” or “you will be left shivering when you see my silver crown.” Then soft electronic and organic percussions enter.
The most beautiful moment comes with that “look at me, but look at me, don’t stop looking at me”, in which Martin turns the sun into a lover and the eclipse into a kind of romantic encounter. “Go up to play in the lunar valley”, “when you come to the moon, the stars will wake up” and “we will dance together, around the bonfire” complete an imaginary of this song between naïve and mysterious. The song has something of a story, but also a love and sexual fantasy.
