Marisol Eichborn is a singer and composer of Mallorca who has just published the EP ‘catharsis’, a careful collection of songs that blur the boundaries between flamenco, camera music, soul, spoken word or the most luminous environmental electronics. It can be one of the most careful debuts of the year.
Eichborn, who began composing songs with 17 years, and was part of the band Riot Grrrl Love Loba, collaborates in this new stage of his career with the producer settled in Barcelona David Fons. Together, Eichborn and Fons create dream landscapes for Eichborn’s biographical stories, which in his lyrics recalls his childhood (‘Sun’) or transmits the advice on the life he received from his elders (‘Nobody City’).
The productions of ‘catharsis’ are encouraged with British-style breaks (‘no one city’) or with rhythms that we can associate with a type of industrial trip-hop (‘stories’). It shines, on the bases, the expressive voice of Eichborn, apparently influenced by the vocalists of Soul from past times.
It is striking that Eichborn divides the slopes of ‘catharsis’ by “chapters”, giving them a global and narrative sense, in the way of ‘bad love’ of Rosalia. And to a kind of new flamenco points the best track of the EP and our song of the day, ‘Raíces’, which crosses the musical past of Eichborn and the present.
‘Raíces’ is a careful production of flamenco with electronic influences in which palms and light synthesizers coexist and that becomes a rhythmic section that we can associate with Chill Out or New Age. As we say, the influences of ‘catharsis’ are blurred, but well assimilated.
The history of ‘roots’, on the other hand, connects with Eichborn’s last activist, more or less evident or voluntary. “I complain to the police, Maria’s rage / When she knows what happens / I can not do anything” is a revealing passage. In the song, the narrator goes to a “priest” and sentence that “the sin of a girl is not measured with a neckline.” In another passage about lyrical creation, Eichborn seems to find refuge.
