‘What Was That’ has been a good introduction for ‘Virgin’, the album that Lorde publishes at the end of June. Next to the ‘melodrama’ sound, he immediately got better positions on the lists than the songs of what was his latest album so far, ‘Solar Power’. In his fourth week, he resists in the Top 30 in the United Kingdom.
His new bet is a minimalist song called ‘Man of the Year’. Despite the few elements that it has in principle (low and voice, a certain air to Lou Reed), then there is a small developed crescendo with producer Jim E-Stack. Lorde has said that this song dives very deep inside and that it is the song that produces the most pride of all those included in ‘Virgin’. It is our song of the day.
In his video, Lorde appears Dress with a shirt and jeans, suddenly it emerges from the shirt, the chest is covered with a tape and fight in the sand for being “the man of the year.” Lorde had already declared lately that he does not feel “neither man nor woman” and appeared just with this same look at the Met gala.
What is telling us the lyrics? The text speaks, how could it be otherwise, of gender identity, addressing a couple, apparently: “You knew me in a very strange period of my life (…) My love cannot believe that I have become another person / another one like me.” The chorus wonders, torn: “Who will love me like this?”, In the line of his masterpiece ‘Liability’. And finally add: “Love me like this, now that I have broken / an applause for the man of the year.”
On the other hand, Lorde has revealed the ‘Virgin’ tracklist. He thinks about this new era in our Lorde forum.
