Lizzo will play Sister Rosetta Tharpe in the biopic on the American guitar pioneer that prepares Amazon MGM. The film has not yet been assigned director, but he knows that they have written the Natalie Chaidity and Kwynn Perry script and that Forest Whitaker will be in charge of the production with Nina Yang Bongiovi, Kevin Beisler and Lizzo herself, according to the information of The Hollywood Reporter. Among the musical tapes produced by Amazon MGM is the Oscar -winning ‘Sound of Metal’ (2019).
Sister Rosetta Tharpe was one of the pioneers of rock Thanks to its innovations on the electric guitar and the Gospel, Tharpe influenced artists such as Little Richard or Elvis Presley.
Known for being the “grandmother of rock ‘n roll”, it is generally accepted that Rosetta Tharpe – although he married men – maintained romantic and sexual relationships with women who had to hide from the public eye. His biopic will tell this part of his life, too, but he will focus “on a key period of Tharpe’s life, when he received praise for his guitar sound and prepared to give the first stadium concert in history.”
Lizzo, on the other hand, prepares this year the launch of his new album, the first after the accusations he received in 2023 by his dancers for sexual harassment and to create a hostile work environment. The first two singles of Lizzo’s new album have been ‘Love in Real Life’ and ‘Still Bad’. None of these singles have produced impact on success lists.
Recently, Lizzo has defended his music from the voices that have criticized his two new singles for being “too positive in a post-covid world.” Lizzo has argued that criticisms have a racial bias because “black joy still bothers people.” Lizzo has declared that the world continues to “treat black women worse than anyone” and has compared the hatred he has received with the hatred they lived in the last icons such as Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston, Tina Turner or Bobby Brown. Above all, Lizzo has claimed that he will continue to make positive music.
