Anyone who tuned into MTV in the ’90s will remember ‘Kiss Me’ by Sixpence None the Richer. The group ended up as an ill-fated “one hit wonder”, since only a depressing version of ‘There She Goes’ could overshadow it in their repertoire, but today ‘Kiss Me’ is approaching 900 million streams on Spotify. Little joke. And it was the first song that Taylor Swift learned to play on the guitar, that is, history.
Blackpink’s LISA is set to make a song inspired by ‘Kiss Me’ her new international solo hit. After ‘Rockstar’ and ‘New Woman’ with Rosalía, her new bet is very different. ‘Moonlit Floor’ is a disco-style song, which interpolates the 90s hit. Only instead of also being called “kiss me”, it takes another phrase from the original song, which said: “Kiss me beneath the milky twilight
“Lead me out on the moonlit floor.”
Your success is to take your desire to a different register. ‘Kiss Me’ was a song that sounded like some Cranberries inspired by Montmartre to sneak into some more soundtrack. From some movie shot in Paris. LISA’s production, which actually happens to mention Paris, seems instead inspired by Sabrina Carpenter’s ‘Espresso’ or the Cardigans’ ‘Lovefool’, as it is definitely disco.
Coincidentally, Sixpence None the Richer release an EP at the same time (‘Rosemary Hill’), they promote their tour and are delighted with the invention, as Billboard reports.
Actually, the idea of being inspired by ‘Kiss Me’ comes from LISA’s producer Rykeyz and co-writer Jessie Reyez. The latter was preparing a song that suited her, she tried without success to get the rights through the publisher, so in the end she contacted Sixpence None the Richer through the networks.
Once obtained, paradoxically Jessie Reyez realized that it did not fit her project ‘Yessie’, so she donated it to LISA. The rest can be history: the song goes straight to the top 9 of Spotify Global and that without having been accepted for the moment by Today’s Top Hits.
