Jennifer Finch, L7’s key bassist during the band’s most impactful years, has died at the age of 59 after a long battle with brain cancer that was publicly reported last week.
The group confirmed the news with a statement on social media: “With a broken heart we announce that our beloved bandmate, friend and accomplice Jennifer Finch has passed away today. He had a long and courageous battle against brain cancer. “We love her.”
Later, L7 shared another message: “We are devastated by the loss of our beloved partner, sister and friend Jennifer Finch, whose fierce spirit, humor and boundless creativity helped shape L7 and changed our lives forever. Jennifer was a true original. We love her beyond words. Rest in power.”
Finch joined L7 in 1987 and was the bassist on seminal albums of the grunge era such as ‘Bricks Are Heavy’ and ‘Hungry for Stink’ before leaving the group in 1996. She returned with the group’s reunion in 2015 and participated in their latest album, ‘Scatter the Rats’ (2019). In addition to L7, she was part of OtherStarPeople and The Shocker, founded the label Little Pusher Records and developed a prolific career as a photographer.
Last week, family and friends had launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover the costs of his treatment, preserve his artistic archive and complete one of his last creative projects. The collection is already around $400,000.
