Floating Points have announced a new album, ‘Cascade’. It will be available on September 13th, but there are already three previews available: ‘Birth4000’, ‘Del Oro’ and the most recent, ‘Key103’.
‘Cascade’ will be Sam Shepherd’s first solo album since 2019, when he released ‘Crush’. In 2021, he released ‘Promises’, the ambitious collaboration with the London Symphony Orchestra and Pharoah Sanders. This LP earned him a Mercury Prize nomination and a sold-out show at the Hollywood Bowl in September 2023.
According to Shepherd, ‘Cascade’ is intended as a “sort of continuation” of ‘Crush’, returning to Floating Points’ traditional dancefloor-focused form. As a reminder, Floating Points will be playing at Bilbao BBK Live this weekend.
If ‘Birth4000’ has already made it into our 2023 Yearbook as one of the Best Songs of 2023, ‘Key103′ doesn’t disappoint either. It’s our Song of the Day for this Thursday. A rave that starts with its arms held high, without losing a certain melancholic feel, and that goes through several more and less distressing episodes, and more and less celebratory, until reaching the underlining of the beats at the end. It gets its name from an underground radio station in Manchester that has greatly influenced it, specifically citing Autechre or David Morales’ mixes at the Factory Records store, as Rockdelux reports. The visuals have been done by Akiko Nakayama.
