Kendrick and SZA add another great collaboration on ‘luther’

Kendrick Lamar has turned the industry upside down in the last month of 2024 by surprise releasing a new album, ‘GNX’. Several of the songs from ‘GNX’ already appear among the most listened to in the world, resisting the return of Christmas music to the charts.

Among these songs, ‘luther’ is establishing itself as the most popular of all, even ahead of the cool single ‘squabble up’. Right now, it is ranked 4th overall on Spotify. ‘Luther’ is one of two Lamar collaborations with SZA included on the album, and is today’s Song Of The Day.

‘luther’ is an R&B and hip-hop delight decorated with a classical string arrangement. Key is its use of a sample of ‘If This World Were Mine’, the saccharine song by Cheryl Lynn and Luther Vandross from 1982, itself a version of an old hit by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, from 1967.

Although Vandross’s name gives the title to ‘Luther’, Kendrick connects in the song above all with Marvin through lyrics in which he asks for “light” in the world, instead of darkness. Above all, you want to “eliminate all the pain” your lover may feel. SZA, for her part, provides a personal point of view and, full of hope, awaits the arrival of “better days.”

Lamar and SZA have just announced a joint tour, the Grand National Tour, which will pass through North America between April and June 2025. Before, Lamar will face – for the first time alone – the halftime of the Super Bowl, which will be held next 9 of February.
