Drake, Bruno Mars, Judeline and Russowsky, on Karol G's album

Karol G’s unexpected hit with Judeline and Rusowsky

The Spanish singles chart confirms this week that the hit from Karol G’s latest album, ‘NO ME REGREPENTO DE SENTIR TANTO’, is not the one the Colombian had in mind. ‘BbY WOW’ has risen up the charts since its debut last week at number 30, landing at number 10. Something had to bring Rusowsky and Judeline together as collaborations.

The Colombian’s last single from the album was her melancholic duet with Bruno Mars, ‘Still’. However, both the data on the list – ‘Still’ never made it in – and the number of streams on Spotify indicate that this had to have been ‘BbY WOW’, which almost doubles the number of listens to the song by the author of ‘The Romantic’.

We have already mentioned the first key. While ‘Still’ is a standard ballad, ‘BbY WOW’ gives off the fresh, summery energy that the public has welcomed with open arms. This one uses the rhythms of reggaeton (produced by Tainy, Rusowsky, Omer Fedi and Karol G) to build an alternative pop song in which its catchy melody is everything: “Your song plays and you are not here at my side / I know that I shouldn’t, that I think of you too much,” Karol sings in the chorus.

‘BbY WOW’ also makes great use of their collaborations, with Rusowsky’s pitched vocals kicking off the song before Karol’s verses make it clear that this is about a lost relationship: “Therapy for what?” “Why get you off my chest?” he sings. The Madrid artist also keeps a verse to himself, while Judeline and her ethereal voice take care of the bridge. It is not a predictable topic and that is exactly what has made it successful.

In the rest of the list there are no more surprises and, in fact, we only find two entries: ‘Where There Was Fire Cenizas Quedan’ by Anuel AA, straight to number 30, and ‘Matanza en el hotel’ by Ultraligera, which has barely entered at number 99.
