Karol G: “They have advised me not to talk about ICE”

Karol G has posed for the cover of Playboy ahead of her imminent performance at the Californian Coachella festival. Speaking about the importance of representing her community in such a relevant event, the author of ‘Tropicoqueta’ has shared some reflections on ICE, ensuring that she would like to talk more about the subject, but that her team has “repeatedly” advised her not to do so for fear of the consequences.

“People tell me, ‘You better not do it.’” “Why? Because if you say something, maybe the next day you will receive a call: ‘Hey, we are revoking your visa,'” the Colombian artist stated. “You become bait, because some people want to show their power,” possibly in reference to Donald Trump and his policy of mass raids and deportations.

Karol G points out that her “team would kill her” if she were to pay a price such as losing her visa by speaking out against ICE, since, logically, her ability to work involves many other people. However, Karol G seems uncomfortable about not being able to speak: “If I’m honest with you, it’s something that crosses the line of what I have to do to protect myself. But at the end of the day, what is my role if I’m in this position?”

In the interview, Karol G hints that she could speak at Coachella: “I have a huge stage, and that’s why I want to wait. If someone ever did something to me, I want to stand firmly on my stage for my community. That’s why I may have to be more careful, wait my turn and make sure that, through that opportunity, I can speak and represent something else.”

The artist adds: “I cannot remain silent when something hurts me. I am Colombian and my country is going through a devastating time. I am Latina and what is happening to my community is deeply painful. To the families who are currently going through moments of fear, loss and anguish… I am with you too. I am with my people. Always.”
