Kacey Musgraves won the GRAMMY for Album of the Year for ‘Golden Hour’ (2018), dedicated to her marriage. But after a divorce and several relationships, he is now on two wheels. She tells it herself in ‘Dry Spell’, the first single from a new album that will be released on a date as important as May 1, under the title ‘Middle of Nowhere’.
In Spanish it could have been titled something like “The Last Town”, and official information indicates that this sixth album by Musgraves marks her great return to country, the genre that made her popular thanks to her first two albums.
All you have to do is look at the guests on the album, who range from Willie Nelson to Miranda Lambert. There are songs titled “Everybody Wants to Be a Cowboy,” “Coyote,” and “Horses and Divorces.” And yes, ‘Uncertain’ is a Texas town with that name.
‘Dry Spell’ fulfills the promise of its title, sounding somewhat dry and harsh in production and instrumentation, with western and blues-style electric guitars. The lyrics then address the sexual drought with humor and an equally dry tone in the performance. Kacey laments that no one visits her anymore, that she has “bacon but no one to share it with,” and that she is waiting for a “storm” to cure her drought. In the chorus he directly calls emergencies: “911, it’s a cry for help.”
The official information about ‘Middle of Nowhere’ states that the album “is inspired by the love of Texas dance hall classics”, that the lyrics explore the human condition from a humorous touch, and that the music experiments with regional styles such as norteño or zydeco.
