Justin Timberlake returns to the music scene. He does so with the announcement of a new album, ‘Everything I Thought It Was’, which will be his sixth album. This will also be his first studio album since ‘Man of the Woods’ in 2018. The album can now be pre-save on Spotify with a release date of March 15.
The announcement of Timberlake’s return comes accompanied by a new song, ‘Selfish’, presented live during a concert in his hometown of Memphis, and which is available today, January 25.
‘Selfish’ dispenses with the pyrotechnics of ‘Suit & Tie’ or ‘SexyBack’ and opts for a mid-tempo R&B sound that recalls that of ‘Rehab’, Timberlake’s collaboration with Rihanna from 2009. Although the news is that Timbaland is not is involved in the production of ‘Selfish’. It is a song produced by Timberlake together with Louis Bell (Post Malone, Halsey) and Cirkut (Ava Max, Kesha) that leans towards the classic.
The singer wanted to announce the album with a trailer narrated by actor Benicio Del Toro. In the 30-second video, Justin Timberlake appears with his back to the camera on a model of a gas station in the desert, where a painted sunset can also be seen in the distance. “What the hell is he looking at?” Del Toro asks in his voice-over.
The artist will appear as a guest on Saturday Night Live this Saturday. Although he has hosted the show five times and has acted up to six times, he has not visited SNL since December 2013. Only his return to the music scene could end that streak.
