Juanjo, Martin… and Hidrogenesse search for ‘El Destello’

Juanjo Bona and Martin Urrutia, two of the finalists of Operación Triunfo 2023, release a joint single. In ‘El Flash’ they are joined in the composition by Genís Segarra and Carlos Ballesteros, that is, Hidrogenesse, who also produce the song.

Hidrogenesse, for two decades one of the indispensable groups of Spanish pop for songs like ‘Disfraz de tigre’ or ‘There is nothing more sad than yours’, sign a composition 100% in their style, so much so that it is Genís and Carlos who we really listen to in lyrics, melody and production, even if it is Juanjo and Martin who provide the vocals. By the way, Juanjo’s melodic voice and Martin’s sweet register match very well; They both make a very good musical couple.

But it turns out that this duo of television singers also matches with the duo composed of Segarra and Ballesteros. On the one hand, Juanjo and Martin’s distinctive voices add dimension to ‘El Flash’. On the other hand, the song screams Hidrogenesse from all sides, starting with that lyric “what I like the most is when you whistle at me” which is followed by a whistle; the unusual tempo, or that electronic design of nervous and playful rhythms, which takes us to ‘Animalitos’ (2007).

It is also inseparable from Hidrogenesse and the entire Austro-Hungarian universe, from Astrud to Single, these lyrics that are so plain and traditional but, at the same time, profound, which relate the moments prior to the confession of a love. A lyric that identifies with Juanjo and Martin’s own experience at the Academy: one talks, wanders and rambles, looks away. The other approaches, looks up and down, seduces. But the explosion is inevitable.

‘El Destello’ is Juanjo’s first single since the premiere, last July, of ‘Mis tias’, his song composed with El Buen Hijo. We had not heard anything from Martin since the release of his debut single, ‘rompeolas’, one of the most successful of its release, as it is approaching 10 million streamings.

Of course, ‘El Flash’ is not the first time that Hidrogenesse has collaborated with former Operación Triunfo contestants: in 2023 they worked with Amaia Romero, who also releases a single today, on the songs from the ‘La Mesías’ album, performed by the Stella Maris group.
