Joji, who was once one of the most absurd characters on the Internet, has become one of the most effective balladeers today. ‘Past Won’t Leave My Bed’, the latest preview of the upcoming ‘Piss In The Wind’, is another devastating (and beautiful) gem of theirs. It is also the Song of the Day.
‘Glimpse of Us’, released in 2022, reached number 1 globally on Spotify and is today the biggest hit of Joji’s career, although no one saw it coming. On ‘Past Won’t Leave My Bed’, he repeats the formula with another honest and direct piano piece. If something isn’t broken, there’s nothing to fix.
If that song was about seeing a past relationship in another person’s eyes, ‘Past Won’t Leave My Bed’ talks about the torment of that relationship by following the protagonist to his bed. “I open my eyes / His face remains on the walls,” Joji sings in the chorus. He tries to “move on”, but the past won’t let him rest. In a tragic moment in the lyrics, Joji can’t find a solution: “I know I can’t sleep forever.”
The video clip is also a clear ‘throwback’ to ‘Glimpse of Us’, recorded in first person and starring someone who doesn’t mind being arrested by the police or, why not, petting a bear that approaches him in the middle of the forest. On the other hand, Joji has also released the short and acoustic ‘If It Only Gets Better’, as well as the distorted ‘PIXELATED KISSES’, wonderfully received by the public.
