After publishing “The Devil’s House” in 2023 and receive very good reviews, John Darniellevocalist of The Mountain Goatssurprises us again with “Universal combine harvester” . On this occasion, he presents a novel in which he breaks all the stereotypes and rules established in suspense literature. This is the sixth book of Darnielle to date. In addition, it has a Spanish translation of Javier Calvowhich will publish Arista Martínez he February 11.
The novel starts from a suggestive and strange premise at the same time: Jeremy, a young man who works in the 90s in a video store in a small town in Iowa, comes across some strange recordings on the tapes that his clients rent. Some facts that inevitably push him to find the creator of those videos. A search that will begin in the depths of the fields of Iowa and that will end as a cartography of pain: here the story finds its roots in what someone once lost and would do anything to recover.
In this way, like a map, the book is not flat or linear, but rather runs through different temporal and sentimental spectrums to offer us a fragmented novel that will be composed little by little as the reading progresses. A mental cartography in which all the essentials of a novel from the North American Midwest of the 90s are found: a lot of cinema, corn fields, houses that contain stories, sects, deaths and a long etcetera more.
