Joan Roca, bassist and founding member of Antònia Font, has died at the age of 51. The news has been confirmed by the musician’s entourage and represents the loss of one of the historical members of the Mallorcan band, of which he was a part since its creation in 1997.
Although he always maintained a discreet profile within the group, Roca was a key piece in Antònia Font’s sound for almost three decades. He participated in all of the group’s albums, from their self-titled debut in 1999 to “One minute strobe” (2022), the album that marked the band’s return after a decade of recording silence. Between them came fundamental works for pop in Catalan such as “To Russia” (2001), “Happiness” (2002), “Taxi” (2004), “Katiuskas Bathyscaphe” (2006), “Lamps” (2011) or “You are here” (2012).
In addition to his career with Antònia Font, Joan Roca also developed other musical projects, including the jazz group Geometrical Sardine.
Antònia Font was scheduled to perform this Saturday, July 25, at the Mobofest, in Mallorca. At the moment, the festival organization and the band have not communicated whether the concert will continue after the death of the musician.
