While she continues to rock her collaboration with Tame Impala, ‘Dracula’ – actually a remix of the original hit signed by Kevin Parker -, Jennie launches an unexpected candidate for song of the summer. It’s called ‘Less than a Lover’ and it’s a song with a marked Mediterranean feel.
It is a pleasant and relaxed composition with echoes of indie-pop, bedroom-pop and bossa nova. Built on a mid-tempo sustained by guitars, drums and atmospheric synths, it finds Jennie singing in one of her most delicate registers.
The catchy melody accompanies lyrics about a summer romance, filled with references to water and summer, and topped by a bridge that repeats “Just splash, splash, splash, splash / Splash, splash, splash, splash” before returning to the chorus. The result is a song that is as pleasant as it is harmless, which is pleasant to listen to but hardly leaves any residue.
Presumably the first preview of Blackpink member Jennie’s second solo album, ‘Less than a Lover’ changes the urban sound of her debut for a much more Mediterranean landscape. So much so that the video clip was filmed in Girona, in the middle of the heat wave.
The video, of course, has attracted attention for a scene in which Jennie greets her partner (Nah Kai) while an estelada waves beside her. Some already proclaim her an icon of the Catalan independence movement; For now, the refreshing breeze of this nice song remains.
