History of Jamo

In December 1966, in the fishing village of Glyngøre, Denmark, carpenter Preben Jacobsen converts a chicken coop on his property and equips it for a completely different purpose. This is where he begins building meticulously designed speakers.

Possessing excellent woodworking skills and extensive knowledge of acoustic technology, he begins to develop speakers that attract a fair amount of attention, if not a large number of buyers.

Before long, Preben realized that selling the products he had been building was not his greatest strength, and in 1968, Preben’s brother-in-law, Julius Mortensen, joined the mission, bringing with him a wealth of sales experience gained by work in the fishing industry. The two then officially founded Jamo, creating the company’s distinctive name from the first two letters of their last names (Hacobsen + mortensen).

Preben Jacobsen

Within a couple of years, they moved into their first real production facility, and by 1987, over a million speakers had rolled off the Glyngøre assembly line.

Throughout the 1990s, Jamo’s reputation as one of Europe’s largest and most respected speaker manufacturers grew. By 1994, the company was the largest speaker manufacturer in Europe, and by 1998, it had sold more than 11.5 million units.

This success also made Jamo a highly desirable partner, culminating in its acquisition by Klipsch Group, Inc. in 2005. The resulting company has brought additional resources. Today, the company that once occupied a chicken coop proudly occupies offices around the world.
