The solo career of Jade Thirlwall – one of the members of Little Mix – is one of the biggest surprises of 2024. Her first single, ‘Angels of My Dreams’, has been a breath of fresh air, and the follow-up, ‘Midnight Cowboy’, has been even more experimental. The third is a song called ‘Fantasy’ which is also not exactly what you expect.
‘Fantasy’ is another of those pop songs covered in sequins and glitter that are inspired by the disco productions of the late 70s and early 80s. However, it is not the typical processed disco-pop recording, but that recovers the magic of true disco music. It tastes like Donna Summer and also has a bit of Jessie Ware or Jungle in it.
The mention of Donna Summer is not accidental, since ‘Fantasy’ is an invitation to sensuality and, specifically, to the realization of one’s own sexual “fantasies.” It’s the Song of the Day for today Saturday.
You could say that ‘Fantasy’ is an ode to kink: Jade sings that “if you like it strange, I like it strange”, she advocates living “pleasure” without “shame”, she claims that “we can go all the way”. As far as we want, we can be strange” (she sings the word “bizarre”) and promises to “tell you all my secrets and bring to reality all those crazy things” that she likes.
To bring this “fantasy” to the visual world, Jade has counted on none other than David LaChapelle. The video is a tribute to Soul Train in which Jade sings on stage while the audience dances. But there is plot twist and it has a name: ‘Carrie’.
