«I don’t wanna be French»: Lady Gaga sneaks into the World Cup

After Spain’s 2-0 win against France and the team’s passage to the World Cup final, TikTok has found a new soundtrack for the celebration. ‘Bad Romance’ by Lady Gaga has become a kind of unofficial anthem of the Spanish victory due to a curious confusion with the lyrics of its chorus.

The reason has nothing to do with football, but with a mondegreen, the name given to that moment when we misunderstand the lyrics of a song. In the chorus of the 2009 classic, Gaga sings “I don’t wanna be friends,” although to many it sounds exactly the same as “I don’t wanna be French.”

With the rivalry between Spain and France as a context, the internet has done the rest. Especially TikTok has been filled in the last few hours with videos of the Spanish celebration, of the French players leaving the field and even of jokes that replace the croissant with toast with tomato and ham to the rhythm of ‘Bad Romance’, as reported by Eldiario.es.

‘Bad Romance’ has even slipped into the top 100 of the most listened to songs in Spain on Apple Music thanks to the viral phenomenon, specifically in position 90. The platform does not move as many users as Spotify, but it is not a minor achievement either.

Of course, Lady Gaga never says “I don’t wanna be French.” But that hasn’t stopped ‘Bad Romance’ from being heard everywhere again. This same year, JENESAISPOP chose it as the best song of Lady Gaga’s entire career, in a special about her career.
