Hayley Williams's non -disk is confessional ... and something flat

Music news

Hayley Williams is 37 years old and no idea of anything, in the great ‘glum’

Hayley Williams, leader of Paramore, has recently surprised to throw 17 new songs without grouping them into an album. However, Williams has confirmed that this batch of themes will be launched in physical format: he only needs her fans to help her decide the order of the tracks.

One that should appear well in the repertoire is ‘glum’, which has not only worked as a “focus track” on the premiere day of this non -disc, but is counted among the best compositions ever written by Williams, in Paramore or alone.

‘Glum’ is an issue about loneliness, probably about depression (“in the sunrise of your sunlight, I have never felt more gloomy”). Williams expresses this idea with a shocking phrase: “Do you sometimes feel so alone that you could implio and nobody notice it?” In this state of melancholy, Williams imagines a return to a safe place, of origin, and transmits his need to stop, stop and listen, “all day”, a song that accompanies her.

‘Glum’, however, is not exempt from humor. In the best verse of the song, Williams comments his confusion before adulthood: “I am about to turn 37, and I don’t know, I don’t know if I will ever know, what the hell are I doing here, do anyone know if this is normal?”

Williams delivers one of his best and most successful ballads here. The influence of alternative pop-rock is perceived in guitars and melodies, but what really highlights is its vocal production, where it raises the tone of its voice until creating an almost alien effect. This technique greatly evokes the production style of ‘Nikes’ (2016) by Frank Ocean, applied to a song that Natalie Imbruglia could have written.
