Guillo Rist was one of the most complete and promising artists of the last edition of OT, both for his work ethic and his self-confidence on stage. In his first single outside the Academy, the Catalan artist places himself between chaos and silence with ‘MUTE’, one of the most decent songs of his promotion.
‘MUTE’ was already causing people to talk before its release, mainly due to the memes derived from its cover. In this one, Guillo Rist tries to get rid of the white background that has plagued all the releases of the most recent OT contestants by placing his face in extreme close-up. The result, however, is undeniably comical.
Aside from this, Rist’s musical proposal is serious. Following the style of BAJOCERO The production, by Scotty DK, is one of its strong points.
‘MUTE’ constantly plays with breaks, one of its narrative keys: “I embrace silence,” Rist sings in the chorus. It is in this part of the song in which the music is reduced to a piano, and then returns with all kinds of rhythms, synths and a lot of bass. In the final part, the song becomes the complete opposite of silence, with an extremely enveloping mix.
One of the figures behind the composition of ‘MUTE’ is Yarea Guillén, whom we met in 2022 following his debut, ‘Lombardía 22’. She signed a collaboration with Dani Fernández this same year, ‘I won’t stop hugging you’, which instantly became her biggest hit.
The lyrics are not as inspired as the musical section, resulting in something generic. The artist sings about feeling “tiny” and looking for himself “in the mirrors.” For him, silence is his safe place: “I don’t want them to know what I think / That to set an example I sometimes lie / That good advice I no longer have.”
