A living legend of American rap and a reference for several generations, Grandmaster Flash returns to Barcelona to act in the room Razzmatazz this Sunday, September 8th.
Joseph Saddler Grandmaster Flash is a living legend and pioneer of hip hop who has influenced several generations by inventing the rules of the game, mixing beats in New York in the mid-seventies and early eighties. Grandmaster Flash is credited with several revolutionary technical advances in the world of DJing: backspin, punch phrasing and scratching. Techniques that even today, almost forty years later, remain the basis of this language. Techniques like these have influenced later generations of DJs, including the Barcelona DJ2D2who will be the rap legend’s guest artist on this very special day.
Unlike his visit in 2022, this time he promises an eclectic session that will include rap, disco, soul, jazz and even pop, and that is not something we usually get to see from a true legend.
As a producer he is also considered a pioneer, thanks to his early project Grandmaster Flash And The Furious Fivewith Kid Creole and the Mc Melle Melamong other components. In 1980 they signed with the legendary label Sugarhill Gangwhere they would publish in 1982 the legendary “The Message”, considered the first rap with a social message. And that same year Grandmaster Flash would make his star appearance in the cult film “Wild Style”.
In 2006 he received an award for the song “I Am Hip Hop Icon” at the BET Hip Hop Awardsin 2007 entered the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame and in 2009 he received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Urban Music AwardsIn June 2019 he received the Polar Music Prizethe “Nobel Prize of music”, becoming the first DJ to receive this award.
