Goodbye to Sam Moore from Sam & Dave

Sam Moore died this Friday, January 10, due to complications suffered after undergoing surgery. He was 89 years old and yet he was working on a gospel album with Rudy Perez.

As part of the duo Sam & Dave (Dave Prater died in 1988), Moore influenced artists of various generations thanks mainly to two hits that reached number 1 on the R&B charts at the time: ‘Hold On, I’m Coming’ and ‘Soul Man’. Isaac Hayes and David Porter and the Stax label were behind it. After success in the 60s, both songs have achieved hundreds of millions of streams in recent times. Billboard reports that Sam Moore has played for 6 American presidents, from Jimmy Carter to Trump, Obama and the Bushes.

Among the artists who have cited Sam & Dave as an influence, we find people as diverse as Bruce Springsteen, who has published a post excited about this march, or Alabama Shakes, who mentioned them during an interview with our media in 2013.

Sam & Dave played at the 1968 memorial concert for Martin Luther King Jr after his assassination. They broke up in 1970, and Sam released a solo album that featured Aretha Franklin and Donny Hathaway. A meeting was attempted, weighed down by heroin use. In the early ’80s Sam declared himself sober and as a duo, Sam & Dave were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1992.

We must remember that in 2006, Sam Moore released his first album in 30 years. ‘Overnight Sensational’ brought together the likes of Jon Bon Jovi, Mariah Carey, Sting, and the aforementioned Bruce Springsteen.
