«Godspeed» title their new album after the victims of Gaza

Godspeed You! Black Emperor remain one of the most important exponents of post-rock. Especially their impressive album from 2000, ‘Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven’, one of the best of the 21st century, was decisive in definitively defining the genre, after precedents such as their debut, Mogwai or even those rare albums by Talk Talk.

Their new album is due out on October 4th, and we can already hear the final track, the nearly 7-minute instrumental ‘Grey Rubble – Green Shoots’, although the main news is the name they have given to the band. ‘No Title as of 13 February 2024 28,340 Dead’ will be the “non-title” that clearly refers to the number of Palestinian deaths in Gaza as of February 13th. We assume that this was when they finished recording this album. Today there are more than 40,000.

The group’s music has always sounded like the most desolate thing in the world, so no explanations are necessary. Still, the group has shared one of its statements explaining the two parts of the title: “There is no title because what gestures can make sense while small bodies are falling? In what context? What broken melody? Then, a recount and a date to mark a point on the line, the negative process, the growing pile.”

This will be the tracklist of the album:
01 Sun Is a Hole Sun Is Vapors
02 Hole Sun Is Vapors Babies in a Thundercloud
03 Raindrops Cast in Lead
04 Broken Spiers at Dead Capital
05 Pale Spectator Takes Photographs
06 Gray Rubble – Green Shoots
