Gins show their most bleak side in ‘Hostile World’

Gins are known for their endless energy and catchy anthems about love, heartbreak, and everyday shit like anxiety. But like all people, it is impossible for Magüi, Sandra, Raquel and Juls to be at their best all the time. ‘Hostile World’ is the proof of this, and the Song of the Day.

The fact that this is the second single from their new album, ‘Where nothing is for so much’, tells us the importance that ‘Mundo hostile’ has for the band. It is one of the most depressing songs, and with the lowest BPMs, of Ginebras’ career. “If you have come to us for the first time through this song, we normally make more danceable songs,” they warn on their YouTube channel.

They also have a message for those who know them before: “In life everything goes up and down, and we are not always at our best.” These talk about when you wake up and “everything seems to go against the grain” or when “social conventions about what life should be like at a certain age” pass over you. This is expanded on in the lyrics of ‘Hostile World’.

Magüi sings about being “addicted to emotional suicide” while dreamlike keyboards fill the majority of the mix. This describes what it’s like to remember someone you thought you had forgotten: “I look back at messages from three years ago to check if I made it all up or if it was all real.” At the same time, the singer’s words also seem to come from other places, not just from a romantic disagreement: “There is no one at the helm,” she sings.

After an almost glitch section, unheard of in Ginebras’ discography, the most melodic part of the song begins, with lyrics full of elements that are not meant to coexist. Magüi is described as “oil in your water” and “cold in your sauna.” The most repeated phrase is also the only hint of a chorus in the entire song: “If love moves the world, my world is a hostile world.”
