During these last few days, a mysterious vinyl has arrived in American and British stores. This one has a white casing, no author or title, and is completely free. Taking it home, listeners have discovered a down-keyed piano ballad. Many argue that it is Frank Ocean, but the reality seems much less exciting.
There is absolutely nothing on the vinyl packaging to suggest which artist it is. However, some users have shared that the employees of these stores have announced that it is a new song from “a big artist” and that it will be released soon.
On a first listen to the vinyl material, it is clear that this is a male vocalist. Due to the numerous vocal tricks on ‘Blonde’, many users have jumped to the conclusion that it is the long-awaited return of Frank Ocean. When fans began to raise the tone of the recordings, it became increasingly clear that this was not what it was about.
However, we already know that combining Ocean’s name with the concept of new music is enough for half of the Internet to pay attention to it, even briefly. He is not the only name that has emerged: The Weeknd, Ed Sheeran, Travis Scott, James Arthur or Bon Iver are some of the suggestions from fans. Yes, the timbre of his voice is quite similar to that of Justin Vernon, but if anyone has really thought that it is Travis Scott, something has not worked well on an auditory level.
The most likely thing, judging by the versions with the raised tone, is that the vinyl anticipates the return of Lewis Capaldi. Everything fits: romantic piano ballad a la ‘Someone You Loved’, British accent and perfect timing. It is possible that it is Alex Warren, due to his similar musical style, but he just released a single in February and this marketing strategy is more similar to what would be done at the beginning of a rollout, and not in the middle.
On the one hand, it’s fascinating that the Frank Ocean hype is so powerful that people only need a lowered voice to get their hopes up. On the other hand, it has not been confirmed that Lewis Capaldi is behind the recording, so the door is open to different interpretations. What if it’s no one you know? What if record store employees made it all up?
