flowerovlove gets “romantic” in ‘breaking news’

flowerovlove is one of the possible pop revelations of 2024. Although Londoner Joyce Cisse has been releasing singles since 2020, it has been in recent months that she has made a small leap, turning ‘a girl like me’ – released last November – into the most listened to single of her brief career, surpassing 7 and a half million listens on Spotify. Then, ‘Boys’ was Song Of The Day in this house a few months ago.

And flowerovlove’s successes continue because their new single -one of the new releases this Friday- is once again great. ‘Breaking News’ is the Song Of The Day for today, Monday.

‘Breaking News’ is a cute song, and deliberately so, as flowerovlove wrote it “sadly” in an attempt to feel “romantic” (she uses the term “lovey dovey”). ‘Breaking News’, in particular, talks about the process of going “from having a crush, to falling in love uncontrollably, without being able to do anything to stop it.”

In flowerovlove’s childlike way, ‘Breaking News’ celebrates the illusion of an attraction that turns into love. That naive element is present in the chorus’s “hi, hello,” but also in lyrics that speak of “magical” moments and in the shy proposal that flowerovlove makes to the loved one: “If it’s okay with you, I think I’m going to love you for a long time.”

Appropriate, too, is the musical style of ‘Breaking News,’ which captures the feeling of butterflies in the stomach using a classic vocal melody that harks back to sentimental love songs from decades past. Meanwhile, the instrumentation mixes acoustic guitars and hip-hop drums in the style of Peter Bjorn and John and Lily Allen.
