The Sevillian filipendulae releases its first double single, a first firm step towards its debut album, which will be released next spring. Two songs, Cookie andTake the bag, that function as an aesthetic and emotional presentation of a project that moves between contemporary singer-songwriter, electronics and the most intimate experimentation.
filipendulae —who is hanging by a thread— defines himself as an electric singer-songwriter and producer, but his identity goes beyond any closed label. Always linked to sound and what it invokes, his way of understanding music involves melodies that break the language barrier and constant, almost vital creation. If in its infancy the soundtrack was pop and electronic, later came the experimentation, and now, in its debut, everything comes together in a personal and non-hierarchical mix.
Dancing between the role of singer-songwriter and producer, filipendulae builds these songs with a single-string Spanish guitar as the central element. From this limitation, stories are born that speak of heartbreak, internal struggles, the queer experience and art as a way of life, with the conviction that everything makes sense once it becomes a song.
In Cookiethe artist channels a moment of anger and confusion. Written quickly and impulsively after some painful conversations, the song works almost like an emotional vendetta. “It was a necessary catharsis after months in a complex situation”he explains. The production also responds to that impulse: spontaneous, direct and practically closed from its first form, as one of the last pieces created for the album.
For its part, Take the bag proposes a more reflective and generational gesture. The “bag” to which the song alludes is a symbolic container where what has been experienced is kept – the good and the bad – so that it can be handed over to whoever comes after. Written from an imaginary “I”, safer and wiser, towards a younger and scared version, the song is presented as a thank you to those who paved the way and a gift to those who are yet to arrive. It is also a creative statement of principles: much of his production relies solely on his voice, a guitar string, a pill bottle used as a shaker and a few slaps on the thigh.
This double single not only advances the sound of the debut album by filipendulaebut also its philosophy: creating with what you have at hand, converting experience into sound material and assuming that, in the end, everything belongs—somehow—to the song.
